This course is taught in Art classrooms full of engaging resources and creative inspiration
Resources Young People will use
Young people will have access to a wide range of materials including paints, pencils, oil pastels, chalks, charcoal, pens, printing equipment, embroidery tools and sculptural materials.
We will also use iPad apps such as Procreate and Sketchbook.
Alongside practical projects, learners will engage with the work of a range of artists and designers to inspire their ideas.
Links with other partners/agencies
During this course young people may visit museums to inspire their upcoming projects.
This course is often supported by visiting artists and designers.
Course Outline
This course is for those of you who love to be creative and to express yourself! Don’t worry if you feel less confident in your art skills- there is something in this course for everybody.
- For National 1and 2, learners will begin to develop their skills across a range of mediums including printmaking, weaving, painting and drawing.
- For National 3 and above, learners will participate in a design project, where they will develop problem solving skills, explore materials and create designs. Design projects could be in textiles, graphics or jewellery.
- After the design projects, learners will explore traditional art skills through an expressive unit. Learners will build observational skills and media handling techniques.

- Design development and problem-solving skills
- Textile techniques including weaving, embroidery, dying and printing
- 3D sculptural skills using plaster, clay and paper-mâché
- Exploring sensory and process-based art
- Observational drawing
- Painting and colour mixing
- Mixed media including collage and printmaking
Progression Pathways
Learners who join the Art and Design Department can progress through a variety of courses, such as SQA National 1 to 4 as appropriate.
Career routes after school could include engagement or future employment within the creative industries.
Art and Design prepares young people to independently engage with lifelong learning in the arts, creative expression and communication.
