 Cardinal Winning wins the

Commonwealth Legacy Award

We are delighted to announce that Cardinal Winning Secondary school has been awarded the Commonwealth Legacy Award by the Scottish Education Department in an Awards ceremony at the Thistle Hotel in Glasgow last Tuesday.

Mr McDonald in accepting the award thanked the staff, parents and young people in Carding Winning Sec. for all their hard work, endeavour and creativity.

Cardinal Winning has really taken the Commonwealth Games to its heart and staff, pupils and parents alike are passionate about all aspects of the event.

From the start of this current school term we have encouraged pupils to all take up a new sport and on a weekly basis our Commonwealth afternoons have challenged students to develop their skills in sporting venues such as the Velodrome, Tollcross Swimming Pool and Strathclyde Park. Specialised coaching for sports like badminton, canoeing, athletics, ice skating and cycling are part of the programme and help supplement teachers skills. Other activities like  Zumba dance classes, Judo, Golf and Parkour take place in a bid to also inspire pupils to get active.

Aside from the sporting aspect of the Games, pupils were also given Commonwealth countries to study, researching cultures, attitudes, and geography, before presenting their findings back to their peers at our school assemblies.

Our Commonwealth Games Fashion Show, held both in school and  at the City Chambers helped showcase pupils’ learning in an exciting way. Recycled materials were used to create their stylish creations.

S1-3 classes made contact with schools in Canada and emails, letters and powerpoints were used to create friendships with Commonwealth partner schools.

To round off all of our wide variety of activities, pupils from Cardinal Winning were also involved in the East40 charity single for the Commonwealth Games and UNICEF which was an amazing experience for them, some of our children appearing on TV and in national Press.

Mr McDonald said “At Cardinal Winning we do not just see the Commonwealth Games as coming to Scotland or to Glasgow, we see them as coming to our school, which is why it could not be more fitting for us to receive ten tickets for the Opening Ceremony as part of our winners prize. I am truly delighted for all of our staff and pupils’ hard work to be recognised in this way.”
